Time keeps a flyin' by and the other day I was reading the weather forecast and the meteorologist said something about "summer-like" weather. Huh? It's too early for that. Well, then I got to thinking and remembered that it is indeed the month of May, so such weather patterns would be permissable. I guess with such a ridiculously freezing and gloomy winter, I was subconciously consigning myself to colder weather for longer than necessary. So, bring it on!!!
Lately I have been amazed at how funny my children are. Correction, that's always been the case. Everything with Derek's is "tonight," "today," he wants it 2 times, and tries to negotiate everything. At dinner when we're trying to coerce him to eat more of something and we dictate how many bites is sufficient, he always retorts back with another amount. We eventually settle on what we deem satisfactory and dinner continues. The other day he was trying to clean the extension cord in the extra bathroom, while it was plugged in. Needless to say, Mommy only plugs it in when in use now. Just yesterday, while "helping" me make Lentil Salad for dinner, I was squirting dijon mustard into a teaspoon and Derek quickly observed and said, "It's poop!" I had to keep from laughing, explained that it's mustard (ou mostarda), and then he responded, "Oh, it's good." Yes, son. I will say, it does resemble baby poop quite closely. I still like it just fine. He is WAY into construction equipment right now- the big stuff. We've checked out quite a few library books about them lately and now everywhere we go, he sees mixers, loaders, cranes, dumptrucks, excavators, and the like. I'll admit, I'm learning what they're all called myself. I was too into playing with dolls and winning bike races as a little girl- oh, and piano. Derek also continues to love trains, garbage trucks, and pretty much all locomotives. Little boys are SO FUN!
Benjamin, in the last week, has finally decided that walking is preferrable to crawling. He still, on occasion, resorts to crawling, but really enjoys walking (our toddling) around now. It's so cute to watch him and he sometimes sticks his tongue out. He's trying to be a picky eater, but we won't have it! I figure if he doesn't want what we're eating, he can eat at the next meal and that he'll finally figure out that if he's hungry, to eat what's placed before him. He's too young to know what he likes and doesn't. Sometimes I wonder how much of it has to to with the fact that he's teething so certain textures are harder for him. For example, he's LOVED cut-up tomatoes in the past and wouldn't eat that yesterday. Meat seems especially difficult for him. He does best when it's mixed in things. And perhaps his ability to chew just isn't quite where I think it is yet. He charms people everywhere we go, yesterday at WinCo being a prime example. He bounced up and down in the cart, smiling to everyone and everything. We call him our little "bird" because anytime someone is eating, he approaches them, exhibiting maximum cuteness, pulls himself up and high as he can and waits for his bite. If refused, he yells. My morning green smoothie is a daily example. It's fun to watch him play with the cars when Derek is out of the room. He looks around to make sure Older Brother really is gone, and then proceeds to play, do sound effects, all with Derek's favorites, of course. Oh, and he freaks out on elevators. I gotta admit, it's rather funny.
Tyler continues to love his new job at the prison. He takes crap from no one (big surprise) and is working on finding the best time-efficient options for his downtime waiting for calls. One of which is developing a exercise habit- I'm very excited about that. He's always on high demand by Derek at bathtime (Mommy is forbidden to wash or dry him). He's all about getting our garden ready and thriving. I love how he's reading books to better himself and shares what he learns with me. I could be smug here and say that when he shares such things I'm thinking to myself "Jeez, it's about time!"- but that would be fibbing. In all reality, it's fun when he shares and I'm learning too.
As for myself, I'm just counting down til my marathon in a week and a half. I can hardly wait! I LOVE the course (who doesn't love Ogden Valley?!) and am feeling pretty amazing. I went and helped my friend Andrea yesterday since her 2nd little one arrived just 2 weeks ago. It was a delight and pleasure to be with her and ease her burdens a bit. I too am excited for out summer garden. The huge tree in the back is gone, so we have A LOT more sun and therefore an equal amount more of growing potential. Now that I'm gluten free, growing my own squash is something I really want to get good at. Speaking of which, it's employee appreciation week at work and they provided free lunch today. When I discovered this, I was cautiously excited. Well, turns out they had bbq beef sandwiches. Bummer! I at least enjoyed a fruit kabob. Sigh. I'm grateful that such moments are rare and I'm 99% glad to be free of gluten. I feel a lot better.
We went to Lagoon this past Saturday since Mia and Katee were dancing in some huge competition. It was fun to be with family and we all completely wore ourselves out. Derek LOVED some of the kiddy rides and Ben freaked out on the carousel, as predicted. The previous evening we all enjoyed eachother at LaNan's and ate til we popped. We celebrated Mom's birthday too. Family is heavenly indeed!
Well, that was a ridiculously long post!

And so it goes...
Well, life keeps on going and everytime a month is about to end, I look at the calendar in disbelief- where does the time go?! At night when I give Benjamin his bottle, I look at his feet, legs, hands, etc. and swear he's bigger than the day before. Derek is no longer a toddler, but an actualy little boy. Tyler is a man and father, getting started in his career. Then there's Me, still 23, or so I think. My grey hairs are mutliplying, my eyes are baggier in the mornings, and my varicose veins only get worse. I don't mean to sound pessimistic, it just boggles my mind how the time seems to fly at lightning speed.
Sometimes at night, before I turn it, I go check on Derek and Benjamin (mostly to make sure Benjamin is covered up). There is a sweet peace and tranquility in the room of small children when they're sleeping. Something divine and celestial. There have been nights when I'll go in there and say my prayers, just to feel a little closer to Heaven. I often don't want to leave. Rather ironic given how frustrated I can get with my 2 smaller macacos. Funny how that is.
Tyler started his new job at the prison almost a week ago. Having a happy Daddy sure makes a difference! He really enjoys it. We all have an innate desire to contribute to something bigger and better than ourselves and I think he's finally starting that journey career-wise. Ya, his co-workers gossip and such- something he's getting used to and rising above, but he's doing something, I feel, he was born to do. He's a little out-of-practice in the stay-at-home dad department. He'll get in the groove more since Mindy will mostly be working on his off days. There will be some growing-pains, to be sure. But, he's a good father, loves his children, and really knows how to play with them.
We went to the zoo this last Friday since both Mommy and Daddy were off work. Oh my school children everywhere!!! It got worse and time wore on. I'm glad we were there on the early end of the morning.
Benjamin still doesn't want to walk for an audience, Derek continues to try and control his brothers' every action, and Mom wonders how much to care about it all. Ya, the kids probably watch too many movies, Mommy probably doesn't disclipline like she should, the house could be cleaner, the back room could be done and organized (that would be REALLY REALLY awesome- Tyler), we could all eat a little less dessert, and Mommy could maybe be a little less obsessed about running and working out (that's a big maybe). But hey, if we had it all together, we'd be translated and then no one here on earth could enjoy us! So there you have it.
Three cheers for Spring!

I'm still 23, right?
I frequently catch myself in my thoughts, "I'm 32. I'm 32..." I have to remind myself of my age- does that just get worse as time goes on? Uh oh. I also frequently look at my life and say, "I'm not old enough for this. I'm married and a mother- like I know what I'm doing!" Sigh. Regardless of these musings, my 2 little boys steal my heart every day, despite the exasperating moments. Here are a few of the latest happenings of my 2 little macacos....
DEREK:
Him peeing into the water play area at Discovery Gateway on a preschool field trip. Some germo-phobe parent had to have been watching, in utter freak-out mode.
On the way to the bank to sign onto my mother's account, Derek wanted her to get out of the way so we could pass the firetruck up ahead.
Leaning out the mini-car shopping cart at the grocery store so he could drive a toy truck someone left there. We went all through the store with him leaning out, driving that silly truck.
At dinner the other night, Tyler said he wants to go fishing next week and was saying he didn't know who he'd take. Derek immediately piped up, "Take me!" and then proceeded to give Daddy his cheezy smile.
BENJAMIN:
He's finally decided that taking a few walking steps for Mommy is okay, but I'd better not ask too much!
Biting Derek back in wrestling session. The kid's just trying to find a defense mechanism of some kind that's effective!
Climbing into the tupperware drawer one morning in hopes it would boost him higher so he could see what Mommy was doing. It was all for naught, but he sat down and made himself comfortable.
When throwing a fit, he prefers to be carried like a sack of potatoes. Not so easy for Mommy.
Making little sound effects while driving cars on the floor or window seal.
TYLER:
Okay, so I just wanted to take a moment and celebrate, again, that he's starting a new job soon!!!!! He'll start at the Utah State Prison as an EMT on April 15. Kissing graveyards goodbye is a very exciting change we're all looking forward to. He can get on the path for his chosen career in Emergency Management. It's like the flood gates have opened as a sign that this is the right thing for him and thus our little family.
MINDY:
I have a love-hate relationship with marathon training. Sigh. Someone very smart and with large capacities to decipher brain and behavior needs to dissect my brain. I really think my chances are good for a BQ in Ogden in May, but then I'm nervous because I only have 2 long runs left, both 20 milers. Part of me wants like another 3-4 weeks to train. That darn perfectionism!! Well that was a nice little spell of a runner's venting session.
*It's 9:45 and I should be in bed. Good night. Oh, and Derek's crying. He probably needs to go xi xi.
